Gold Mining Claim

A friend sent me a link to a mining claim on eBay:

PLACER GOLD MINING CLAIM, 40 ACRES, Trinity River, Cali

First of all, I'd rather spend the $22k on pms themselves. How would one figure out if this is worth it, if there would actually be gold there, or at least 22 ounces? If it was worth it, why wouldn't the owners just keep it?

Why does this have a swampland-in-Florida feel to it?

Just curious.

Re: Gold Mining Claim

Newbie here, so take this with a grain of salt:

1. It's a mining claim only. I don't think most people know what that entails, including me. You are not buying land, as this claim is located in a state forest.

2. I'd compare it to buying a fishing license & having access to Lake Minnetonka. Yes, it's a great, beautiful area; but YOU still have to get the fish out. [Or in this case, the gold.]

Personally, I'd sink the money into PMs & forget the panning.
